It takes one day to earn the children’s respect.

As it turns out, respect is rather easy to come by when you can produce a swarm of flesh-eating cobra lilies at the snap of your fingers.

“Are the carnivorous plants really necessary?” Quill asks me one day at lunch. I’ve transitioned to sitting at the staff table, even if I stay toward the far end.

I just shrug. “Just consider it motivation.”

“You’re terrifying,” he says, but with a glint in his blue eyes that has my stomach doing cartwheels.

As it turns out, the flesh-eating cobra lilies are good for more than lighting the fire under my students’ rear ends. There are all sorts of spells on the Practical exam that are useful for warding off carnivorous plants and the effects of their bites.

The students come prepared for class, having practiced dehydration techniques and medicinal salves the night before.

By day three, Emmaline is no longer taking out her back-up notes.

By the end of the week, she doesn’t bring them to class at all.
